TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

back

My general teaching philosophy is to introduce new ways of thinking that empower students to become innovative, collaborative, and focused artists, and to contribute to their overall realization as conscientious human beings. Through application, experimentation and discussion, I offer possibilities and techniques that challenge the students and encourage discourse. My classroom provides a laboratory space where students are given permission to fail and reinvent themselves repeatedly, with the understanding that I will also require them to be fully engaged in class work, and take personal responsibility for their level of participation and the ultimate success of their education.

Voice is one of the building blocks of the actor’s craft, and has the potential to become one of her/his greatest tools, or one of her/his greatest roadblocks. It requires rigorous physical and mental connection, concentration, conditioning and relaxation. I address these challenges through repetition and consistent layering of skills that prepare the body and mind to absorb and retain the lessons. My intent is that voicework become experientially rewarding, and personal to the students, so they develop their own dependable routine of centering themselves and connecting their mind and body through breath and voice.
